#5: Thoughts on TGL & It’s Place in Golf
Dear Pards,
Where have we landed on TGL? Watching the highlights of Thomas Kim’s HIO the other day had me thinking… is TGL… cool? I was definitely worried about Tiger getting hurt celebrating, put in a wellness check on Homa, and might have looked at Allegiant flights to Palm Beach… BUT I didn’t tune in the next time it was on TV.
It feels kind of similar to Rahm’s career these days. If no one watches, does it matter?

Dear Overserved,
There was a time in my twenties when I would’ve bet on underwater badminton if it was on in a bar and Bovada had a line for it. Back then, my only obligations were carrying clubs for high handicaps and selecting which shade of light beer would wet my whistle at the local watering hole afterward.
Now, as a dad with far less screen time, slightly tighter pants, and a much milder gambling appetite, my TV consumption is limited. Like Brady in Tampa Bay, I have to choose my spots. I’ve reached the age where my metabolism moves slower than Akshay lining up a ten-footer. With no room left to poke new holes in my belt, I’m forced to check the kcal count more often than I’d like.
TGL is like a hot pretzel with beer cheese. An item that tastes ten times better in a bar when you aren’t counting calories. Something I just can’t afford to consume when most of my viewing allotment is saved for the real thing on Sunday afternoons.
Rahm, on the other hand, might bite on an offer from New York GC if given the opportunity. A little face time on a network not named FS1 might remind people he still exists.
YTK’s ace was fun to watch. I agree the reactions were just as riveting as the shot itself. We won’t get into whether or not it counts as a “real” hole-in-one. I half expected Kim to start handing out drinks from his electric cooler wagon in the postgame presser.
TGL is a lot like the aforementioned overseed. Flashy. Pretty to some people. Shows decent on TV. It just doesn’t move the needle for me. That said, I’m hearing guys get more grainy lies inside the SoFi Center than they will outside at Pete Dye’s—or should I say Rye’s—Sawgrass this week.
Is TGL cool? Maybe. But so are darts, and I don’t need to watch them on TV.
Mix in a water.
