No. 35: Will Things Change?

Dear Pards,

Longtime Chicagoan, 3.5 index, recovering Torque GC stan, and former ass. pro at Maple Meadows, a few miles east of Medinah.

What a week in the Windy City. Like most people, it’s felt hard to cheer for this US team over the past decade. Part of me was really pulling for the shield, simply to wake up the leadership from the stars and stripes to give us some sense of hope in Ireland next year.

To me, it feels like the outcome was the worst-case scenario. Still stubborn, feeling no need to change, zero lessons learned, and very little emotion. Other than an IG post from JT and Koivun singing about “getting geeked.”

Crazy to say this, but should the US be (thanking?) third-leg Greg and the PIF for their win in Chicago on Sunday?

It sure does feel like Ogilvy was a Joaqo, Herbert, and Cam away from another Miracle at Medinah last week. Now we’re left with a false hope that Furyk has this team exactly where he wants them ahead of Adare.

Thoughts?

Dear Torqueless,

A lot to take in here.

I addressed what I feel is a silent divorce amongst the US Team room in last week’s column. On Saturday night, I felt as if Brandt and Co. were about to get the exact dose of reality they needed.

Instead, we have Sneds saying his team can play team golf after winning [checks notes] Sunday singles, and Quavo & Takeoff Koivun & Thomas rapping about cannibals in coach seeing 3D.

As dominant as the Americans were on Sunday, I do think Andrew Waterman and Norman deserve some of the credit for the US victory. Support from Joaqo and the Torque WAGs would have strengthened the shield enough on Sunday to get the Kims singing Khalifa’s “Black & Yellow” on the bus ride karaoke.

At this point, I’m sure the bulletin board in the European team room looks a whole lot like my sticker-filled, ninth-grade Nalgene. Too many pins for any one in particular to stand out.

Don’t get me started on Scottie. How long until Cara Banks is named as the lead correspondent for Team Europe ahead of Ireland next year?

More questions than answers.

P.S. The stamp at the top of the newsletter is Roaring Gap Club, by Dave Baysden. It is a Ross gem an hour north of Winston-Salem, and a place I was thankful to spend a few days at over the past few weeks.

I know I’ve been a few weeks behind over the past few months getting the mail club out. Life, man. That said, September did, in fact, get in the mail before the first digit of the date turned to “10.” Here’s a photo from Wednesday to prove it.

171 handcrafted envelopes (and a high-crowned ture visor) en route to mailboxes and doorslots across the globe. It’s a letter to an annual golf trip, featuring art from High Meadows and Roaring Gap Club in the hills of NC.

I promise October will be out before tax day for procrastinators the 15th of this month. If you’d like to receive it, or any of the past months, you can find them with the button below.

Thankful you’re here.
